Why this matters

Most of what this site checks is a claim that turns out to be missing something. This one mostly holds up, and it is worth saying so plainly. Rep. Langworthy’s post lists four positions of the Democratic Socialists of America. Three appear in DSA’s own platform in nearly those words and the fourth is what DSA’s 2025 platform says, as quoted by multiple outlets. The gap is one word, “illegal,” and the context is what the resolution he voted for does and does not do.

“The ugly weed of Socialism planted itself firmly in New York State. It is now our duty to stop it from spreading further across America. The DSA’s radical agenda: let illegal aliens vote, abolish the Senate, close prisons, and let Congress, not the American people, elect the President. These anti-American radicals must be stopped.”

In the clip he says DSA members are “openly advocating allowing non-citizens to vote in American elections,” and House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, whom he invites to respond, adds that DSA wants to “abolish the system in which we elect the President, allow Congress to elect it,” and “abolish the Senate.”

H.Res. 1490, “Providing for the condemnation and denouncement of socialism in all its forms,” was reported by the Rules Committee 7–4 on August 31 and passed the House on September 1, 220–192, with two voting present (Roll Call 289; Langworthy Yea; eight Democrats voted yes). Its operative clauses condemn “socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America,” reaffirm support for secure elections, state that “American elections are for American citizens only,” and call for enactment of the SAVE America Act. Nowhere does it define socialism; see the note below.

In plain language: on what DSA wants, the post is accurate. The one stretch is “illegal aliens,” where DSA’s actual language is “every US resident” and “noncitizens”; that covers people without status, but it is not what they wrote, and the resolution’s own whereas clause uses “noncitizens.”

The context

  • The resolution never defines what it condemns. H.Res. 1490 condemns “socialism in all its forms” and “socialist policies” without saying what either is; its whereas clauses describe consequences (“collapsed into communist regimes,” “famine and mass murders”) and DSA planks, not a definition. Three of its five operative clauses are about election rules, and the fifth calls for a specific bill. It is a messaging vote, and it passed as one.
  • “Planted itself firmly in New York State.” The resolution’s own factual anchor is the November 2025 New York City mayoral election and DSA candidates running “in over one hundred elections in at least half the states.” This site’s June entry on his Mamdani post found the “socialist” label fair, “communist” false, and the “across NYS” claim overstated; nothing here changes that.
  • His floor statement was narrower than his post. His September 1 release calls socialism “a corrosive ideology spreading through the Democrat Party” and says “I will always stand on this side of individual liberty and Constitutional freedom.” The post adds the four planks, which is where it becomes checkable, and where it holds.

Questions this raises

  1. The resolution condemns “socialist policies” without defining them. Does the Congressman consider Medicare, Social Security, rural electric cooperatives, or the Rural Health Transformation Program he supports to fall inside or outside that term?
  2. DSA’s platform language is “every US resident.” Why does the post say “illegal aliens” rather than “noncitizens,” the word the resolution itself uses?
